On Your Side Recall Alert: Spa pumps recalled following death of Kansas City, Mo., homeowner

What happened?

The recall involves about 12,000 pumps sold under the brand names: Jacuzzi, Jandy and Waterway. A Kansas City, Mo., homeowner drowned in his spa in June 2021 after being entrapped by suction from a faulty pump.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the pump manufacturers announced the recall in January 2023. The pumps were sold at pool and spa stores nationwide from January 2013 through December 2022.

The pumps have a design defect that can cause the suction to become entrapped and create a drowning hazard.

What should you do?

If you have one of the recalled pumps, stop using it immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit. The repair kit includes a new impeller and suction fitting that will eliminate the entrapment hazard.

The manufacturers are also offering free in-home inspections and repairs for the recalled pumps.
